he Eastgate phase 2 redevelopment constructed on a suspended concrete slab, over two levels of retail floor space, whilst keeping the entire Eastgate shopping center operational, was as if Tass Engineering were building in the sky.

Steelwork was chosen as the main structural medium in the redevelopment of the center as it allowed for minimal foundation underpinning of the 5000 m2 project which includes state of the art cinemas, cantilevered entrance canopies, a new central court with ETFE roof and a feature signage wall.

The design and construction was complex and challenging as it also included the underpinning of the foundations, literally “mining” under the existing lower level suspended slabs and installing mini precast piles.

The successful completion of this mammoth project with its pleasing aesthetics is as a result of the great teamwork and cooperation displayed between the members of the project team.

Tribute was paid to all involved for the innovative and creative use of steel in the Eastgate refurbishment at the South African Institute of Steel Construction 2016 award ceremony.
